Abstract
This report addresses the problem of foreign funding ofpolitical parties in newly democratised African states. Thereport identifies some problems associated with thedevelopment of political parties in Africa and indicate howfunding may contribute to resolving these problems. Variousmodels of foreign party funding that may act as models forthe future Norwegian support programme are presented.Current involvement by Norwegian parties in partysupporting activities in new democracies is assessed in thecontext of a more general discussion of foreign party funding.Lastly, if Norwegian funding for parties is introduced, weaddress some problems to be avoided and indicate anorganisational model that may limit some of the inherentlyproblematic aspects of foreign funding.
